Fire TV Setup

HipDeck runs natively on Amazon Fire TV devices, making it a cost-effective and widely available option for digital signage deployments. This guide walks you through every step — from confirming your device is supported to fine-tuning display settings for the best on-screen results.

Supported Fire TV Devices

HipDeck is compatible with the following Amazon Fire TV hardware. We recommend using a device with at least 2 GB of RAM and a quad-core processor to ensure smooth playback of media-rich content.

• Fire TV Stick 4K — The most popular choice for single-screen deployments. Plugs directly into any HDMI port and supports 4K HDR output.
• Fire TV Stick 4K Max — An upgraded variant with Wi-Fi 6 support and faster processing, ideal for high-traffic environments.
• Fire TV Cube — Amazon's most powerful Fire TV device. Recommended for demanding layouts with video walls, live feeds, or complex animations.
• Fire TV Edition Smart TVs — TVs with Fire TV built in (from brands such as Toshiba, Insignia, and Amazon). No external stick required; the HipDeck app installs directly on the TV.

Older Fire TV Stick (1st and 2nd generation) and Fire TV Basic Edition devices are not supported due to hardware limitations.

Installing the HipDeck App from the Amazon Appstore

HipDeck is available as a free download in the Amazon Appstore. Follow these steps to install it on your Fire TV device:

1. Power on your Fire TV device and ensure it is connected to the internet.
2. From the Fire TV home screen, navigate to the search icon (magnifying glass) in the top navigation bar.
3. Type HipDeck using the on-screen keyboard or voice search.
4. Select the HipDeck app from the search results and press Get to begin the download.
5. Once the download completes, press Open to launch HipDeck for the first time.

If you manage multiple devices, you can also push the app remotely from the Amazon Developer Console or your organization's Mobile Device Management (MDM) solution.

Signing In and Connecting to a Workspace

After launching HipDeck for the first time, you will be prompted to connect the device to your workspace. A unique pairing code is displayed on screen when HipDeck first launches. Log in to your HipDeck dashboard on any browser, navigate to Screens → Add Screen, and enter the code. The screen will register automatically and begin playing your assigned content within seconds.

Keeping the Device Awake and Disabling Screensavers

By default, Fire TV devices are configured for home entertainment use, which means they will dim the display, activate a screensaver, or enter sleep mode after a period of inactivity. For digital signage, you need to disable these behaviors so your content plays continuously.

Disabling the Screensaver

1. Go to Settings → Display & Sounds → Screensaver.
2. Set Start Time to Never.

Preventing Sleep Mode

1. Go to Settings → Preferences → Power.
2. Set Sleep to Never.
3. If available, also disable Automatic Low Power Mode to prevent the device from throttling performance during extended playback.

Additional tips for uninterrupted operation:

• Use the official Amazon power adapter that ships with the device. Underpowered USB ports on the TV can cause instability during long sessions.
• Disable automatic updates or schedule them during off-hours to avoid unexpected reboots mid-display.
• Turn off Alexa hands-free mode if the device is in a noisy environment to prevent accidental wake-word activations.

Recommended Display Settings

Optimizing your display settings ensures your content looks sharp and professional. The following settings are recommended for most digital signage use cases.

Resolution and Refresh Rate

• Navigate to Settings → Display & Sounds → Display and set the resolution to 1080p (Full HD) or 4K UHD depending on your display's capability.
• Set the refresh rate to 60 Hz for smooth animations and video transitions.
• Disable Match Original Frame Rate to prevent the display from switching refresh rates mid-playlist.

HDR and Color Settings

• If your display supports HDR, you may leave it enabled for richer visuals. However, if you notice color inconsistencies between slides, disable HDR and use standard SDR output for more predictable results.
• Set the color space to Auto unless your display manufacturer recommends a specific profile.

Overscan and Display Fit

Some commercial displays apply overscan by default, which can crop the edges of your content. To fix this:

1. Go to Settings → Display & Sounds → Display → Calibrate Display and adjust the screen edges until the full image is visible.
2. On the TV itself, check the picture size or aspect ratio setting and set it to Just Scan, Screen Fit, or 1:1 Pixel Mapping (terminology varies by manufacturer).
