HipDeck supports embedding live Microsoft 365 documents directly into your slides. This lets you display up-to-date spreadsheets, presentations, documents, and notebooks without exporting static files.
Four Microsoft 365 tools support iframe-based embedding:
- Word Online — display live documents with full formatting
- Excel Online — show live spreadsheets or charts that reflect current data
- PowerPoint Online — run presentations as auto-playing or interactive slideshows
- OneNote Online — embed shared notebooks for reference or display
All four tools generate embed codes through OneDrive or SharePoint. The process is consistent across them.
How to Get Embed Codes from OneDrive and SharePoint
From OneDrive
- Open OneDrive and navigate to the file you want to embed.
- Right-click the file and select Embed (or open the file, then go to File → Share → Embed).
- OneDrive generates an
<iframe> snippet. Copy the full snippet.
From SharePoint
- Open the file in SharePoint and click File in the top menu.
- Select Share, then choose Embed.
- Alternatively, from the SharePoint document library, select the file, click the ⋯ (More) menu, and choose Embed.
- Copy the generated
<iframe> code.
Both paths produce a standard iframe embed code you can paste into HipDeck’s embed block.
Use this path to embed a PowerPoint as a live, auto-playing slideshow.
- Open your PowerPoint file in OneDrive or SharePoint.
- Click File → Share → Embed.
- In the embed panel, configure the slideshow options — set Auto-advance slides if you want automatic playback, and choose a starting slide if needed.
- Copy the generated
<iframe> code. - In HipDeck, add an Embed block to your slide.
- Paste the iframe code into the embed field.
- Adjust the width and height to fit your slide layout (see sizing tips below).
- Save and preview — the presentation will play live from Microsoft’s servers.
Note: Viewers see the live file. Any edits you make to the PowerPoint in OneDrive are reflected immediately.
Excel embeds are ideal for dashboards, live tables, or charts that update automatically.
- Open your Excel file in OneDrive or SharePoint.
- Click File → Share → Embed.
- In the embed panel, choose what to show: the entire workbook, a specific sheet, or a named range or chart.
- Copy the
<iframe> code. - In HipDeck, add an Embed block and paste the code.
- Set the dimensions to match the content area you want to display.
- Save and preview.
Live data refresh: Excel Online embeds reflect the current state of the workbook each time the slide loads. If the underlying data changes, the embed shows the updated values automatically — no re-publishing required.
- Open your Word file in OneDrive or SharePoint.
- Click File → Share → Embed.
- Copy the generated
<iframe> code. - In HipDeck, add an Embed block and paste the code.
- Set width to
100% and height to a value that fits the document length you want visible (e.g., 600px). - Save and preview.
Word embeds display the document in a read-only view. Formatting, images, and tables render as they appear in Word Online.
For an embed to render correctly, the file must be accessible to anyone viewing the slide — including unauthenticated viewers.
- Set sharing to Anyone with the link can view (OneDrive) or the equivalent public/anonymous access setting in SharePoint.
- If the file is restricted to specific users or requires sign-in, the embed will show a sign-in prompt or a blank frame instead of the document.
- Organization-wide sharing (e.g., “People in [Your Org] with the link”) will fail for external viewers who are not signed into that Microsoft tenant.
Always test your embed in an incognito or private browser window to confirm it loads without authentication.
Differences Between OneDrive Personal and SharePoint Organizational Embeds
OneDrive Personal
SharePoint Organizational
URL pattern
onedrive.live.com
[tenant].sharepoint.com
Sharing scope
Public or specific people
Tenant-controlled; may restrict external access
Admin controls
Minimal
IT admins can disable external sharing
Embed availability
Always available for personal accounts
Depends on SharePoint site settings
Key behavioral differences:
- OneDrive personal embeds are straightforward — if you set the file to “Anyone with the link,” it works publicly with no further configuration.
- SharePoint embeds are subject to your organization’s external sharing policies. If your IT team has disabled external sharing, embeds will not render for viewers outside the tenant. Check with your SharePoint admin if embeds fail unexpectedly.
- SharePoint embed URLs include a site path and may require the file to be in a publicly accessible document library.
Width: Set the embed width to 100% to fill the HipDeck slide container, or use a fixed pixel value if you need precise control alongside other elements.
Height: Microsoft 365 embeds do not auto-resize to content. Set an explicit height:
- PowerPoint: match the aspect ratio of your slides (e.g.,
506px for a 16:9 presentation at 900px wide) - Excel: set height based on the number of rows you want visible
- Word: set height to show the portion of the document most relevant to your audience
Scroll behavior: Embedded iframes scroll independently from the HipDeck slide. On touch screens or smaller displays, users may need to scroll inside the iframe to see full content. To minimize confusion:
- Crop the embed to show only the most important section (use Excel’s named range option, or set a specific sheet)
- Avoid embedding very long documents where scrolling is required to reach key content
- For PowerPoint, auto-advance removes the need for viewer interaction entirely
Responsive considerations: HipDeck screens vary in size. Test your embed at the target display resolution to confirm the content is legible and the iframe dimensions are appropriate.
